(Answer) (Category) SCO UnixWare 7/OpenUNIX 8/OpenServer 6 FAQ : (Category) Media/Device Information, Filesystems, and Disks :
Do the memfs filesystems, /tmp and /var/tmp, use 50MB of RAM?
The memfs filesystems are not exactly like ramdisks that reserve a section of ram. Memfs uses ram dynamically. If the directories are empty, the ram is not used.

The memfs filesystems on UnixWare 7/OpenServer 6 default to 10 MB for /tmp
and 40 MB for /var/tmp, which is not used when the directories
are empty. It's safe to make them around 100 MB if you want, during
  the ISL.
